Tea is heterogeneous, which means that it is easily affected by air, temperature, sunlight and odours.
Rule No 1: Keep tea away from direct sunlight
Storing tea in transparent glass jars or exposed to sunlight may result in lightening of tea. This adversely affects the appearance and flavor of tea. When storing tea in a transparent jar, ensure it is stored away from direct sunlight.
Rule No 2: Always store tea in an airtight container
Exposure to air or strong odour will cause the tea to develop foul / unpleasant flavour. For example if you store your tea close to strong Indian spices, it is likely that the leaf will absorb the aroma of the spices. Therefore, it is important to store loose tea in airtight containers or re-sealable zipper pouches.
Rule No 3: Avoid storing tea in warm places
Avoid keeping tea in warm places, such as near the gas burner or oven. Proximity to heat adversely affects the chemical and physical nature of tea, at the same time it causes the flavor to degrade significantly. Therefore, it is advisable that tea should be stored in a cool, dark place.
Rule No 4: Avoid storing / exposing tea to humid conditions
Tea leaves are heterogeneous and absorb moisture quickly. Moisture results in odor and undesirable flavor. Try and ensure dry leaves are stored in a cool, dry place in airtight containers.
Rule No 5: Keep tea away from items with strong odour
Keeping loose tea in close proximity of items with a strong odor (such as spices, cheese or soap) may cause the tea to develop an unpleasant flavor. It is advisable to keep a container of loose tea in a neutral spot.
